Northern musical treasures Rediscovering the forgotten folk music traditions of Northern Ostrobothnia The rich rural fiddle tradition of Northern Ostrobothnia flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries but has largely faded from memory. Yet the region once nurtured an exceptionally distinctive musical culture, sustained by highly skilled—and often formally educated—musicians. Individual artistry and community life went hand in hand, giving music an important role in village life. The Sounding Treasure Chest of the North revives this forgotten musical heritage through fresh contemporary arrangements. Rooted firmly in local traditions, the project brings together folk musicians dedicated to preserving, reinterpreting and celebrating the unique musical legacy of the Oulu region. The project's musical director is acclaimed folk musician Antti Järvelä, widely recognised as an inspiring visionary, an expert in Nordic folk traditions and an accomplished artistic leader. Performers Antti Järvelä – violin Erja Pätsi – violin Hilla Kauppi – violin Viljami Pruiksma – violin Kristian Heberg – harmonium Lieteallas A high-energy live performance by: Maisteri Mätä – vocals Benito Pirkola – guitar Aadolf Saasta – bass Ari Hätälä – drums ROOT PERCUSSION AND DANCE Wednesday, 8 July 2026 at 6:00 pm Tyrnävä Town Hall (Kunnankuja 4, Tyrnävä) ROOT explores our relationship with our roots. Where do we come from? What do we carry with us? What remains when everything unnecessary is stripped away? Through a dialogue between percussion and dance, the performance journeys through memories, traditions and transformation. Each work approaches the idea of roots from its own perspective—sometimes deeply personal, sometimes playful, sometimes quiet and contemplative.
